OLD BAILEY COURT CASE NO 2
REPORT - WILLIAM DEAN - 10th Session 1841, Central Criminal Court at the Old Court Thursday 26th August 1841.

William Dean was indicted for stealing on the 22 July, 1 watch, value 29s; 2 seals, value 36s; 1 chain, value 1s; & 1 ring, value 6s; the goods of James Bamfield.
James Bamfield. I live in Upper Park-place, Dorset-square, and am a pensioner. About half-past one o’ clock on the 22nd of July, my watch hung over my mantel-piece - I missed it at half-past five - my parlour door was open - I do not know the prisoner - the watch, chain, & seals produced are mine.
John Fox. I keep a beer-shop in Middlesex Street, Somers-town. About twenty minutes after four o’ clock on the 22nd of July, the prisoner called at my house to inquire if there was a tap-room - he was told not - he went away, & soon after two other persons called in, & one of them let in the prisoner - I heard somebody going up stairs - the other two were going to run away when I came from my parlour to see what was the matter - I seized him & gave him in charge - I saw the policeman take this watch from his breeches pocket, & asked if it was mine - I said no - the prisoner said it was his own - he did not tell me how long he had had it.
Cross examined by Mr Prendergast. Q. Was there not plenty of time for the others to give him the watch?
A. They might - I asked what he did there - he said he was taken ill, & wanted to go backward - the other
two were waiting in front of the bar - The prisoner had the watch in his hand when I first saw him - he took something from his pocket - I did not see what it was - he was holding it out - after he was taken up he wished to go to the water-closet.
William Elmer (police constable S 187). About seven o’clock this evening I was called into Fox’s to take the prisoner for going up stairs, & understood he was trying to pass something to another man - I searched him, & found the watch in his trowsers’ pocket - he said he could not tell, he should know the man again if he was him - I searched him at the station, & found the gold chain, seals, ring, & key, twisted round his braces, separate from the watch - the swivel is of the watch.
Cross examine. Q. Who did you take first? A. The prisoner - next morning, going to the station, he said he had given a man in Oxford Street another watch for it - the other two men were proved to be convicted thieves.
John Evans. I produce a certificate of the prisoner’s former conviction, by the name of Joyce, on the
17th June - (read) - he is the person.
Guilty. Aged 21 - Transported for Fourteen Years.

Family Information:

A copy of a letter from Mary Joyce in England to Edmund Phoenix Webster at Collingwood near Melbourne -
"Dear Brother, this comes with my kind love to you and your wife and your children. I was very happy to hear from you all as I thought I should never hear from you again after so long a time. My husband and children sends their love to you. I have eight in number,
William, Mary, Martha, Thomas, Candace, John, Paul, and Emily.

Dear Brother, I am sorry to inform you that my son William is sent to Hobart Town for 14 years on the 24th August, 1841. He went in the name of William Dean and I have never heard of him since he has been gone. He was 19 years old when he left England, he is a musician. I heard from the coppers office that he was on the public works. He had grown a nice young man and it was great grief to me to part from him.
I hope that you will enquire about him and tell my brother William to do the same. Do not forget to write to me soon.
So no more at present from your affectionate sister Mary Joyce. 67 Cowcross Street, West Smithfield."

We hear of William Joyce for the last time in a letter from his mother, Mary, in England dated 1848 to her brother, Edmund, in Melbourne -

"I am told by a sailor that called to me he (William Joyce) lives at the
Golden Castle, Macquarie Street, Hobart Town, William Joyce, musician, and he told me he is one of the first rate fiddlers in Hobart Town and that he is married and got a child and if you see him or write to him give him my dearest love to him and ask him if has forgot his mother."

While in New South Wales he qualified as a veterinary surgeon, but his interest in racing had 'not waned, and he owned some goodhorses, which he trained himself. After about 25 years at Deniliquin, Mr.Dean returned to Tasmania, and followed his profession, until he retired about five years ago. He was associated with the Tasmanian Turf Club as veterinary surgeon, and was a judge of horses at shows. His first wife died at Deniliquin, leaving a family of three daughters and one son.
